The county's economy is based on the primary sector and tourism. The most important agricultural products that are cultivated in the area are cereals, fodder, cotton, pulses, grapes, cherries and tobacco. In particular, a tobacco variety called "Samson Katerini' is largely absorbed by international markets and is among the best in quality in Greece.

Livestock is also largely developed. Furthermore, there are considerable industrial units. In Mount Olympus and Pieria region, herds of sheep and cattle are bred. The area's dense forests offer timber and raw materials for the manufacture of furniture and charcoal.

There are many tourist developed areas in Pieria, both in winter (eg Elatohori, featuring a Ski Resort) settlements of St. Panteleimon, Upper Skotinas, Palei Pori and Petra as well as in the summer (eg Makrigialos, Katerini, Methoni, Nei Pori Platamonas beach St. Panteleimon, Skotina, Variko beach etc). What's also interesting, is the National Park of Mount Olympus and the wetlands of Aliakmona.

The railway line passes along the coast of the county and most towns are connected by motorways.
